Environmental Impacts.

Hurricanes cause significant environmental damage, including:

  • Coastal erosion and loss of beaches

  • Damage to coral reefs and mangroves, which protect coastlines

  • Water pollution from sewage overflow, oil spills, and debris

  • Habitat destruction for wildlife

  • Soil erosion and land degradation from heavy rainfall

  • Forest damage from strong winds

Hurricanes lead to huge economic losses through damaged homes, businesses, and infrastructure. They cause long-term disruptions to jobs, education, and healthcare systems. Many people are displaced and may face financial struggles during recovery and rebuilding.

Hurricanes rarely hit the West Coast because the Pacific Ocean waters near the United States are cooler and do not support storm formation. Additionally, wind patterns and weather systems usually push storms away from the west. In contrast, the Atlantic Ocean’s warm waters and prevailing winds guide hurricanes toward the East Coast.
